1. Prepare the Surface
Before starting installation, ensure all exterior wood surfaces are properly prepared. Begin by applying building paper to all exterior wood surfaces, ensuring it is secure and wrinkle-free. Next, install metal lath to all surfaces, except for unpainted and untreated masonry surfaces such as brick or block. For metal surfaces, attach the metal lath using self-tapping screws spaced 16 inches apart. For wood surfaces, fasten the metal lath by nailing or stapling at 6-inch intervals, ensuring you hit studs when possible. Always attach the metal lath with the small cups facing upward to ensure proper bonding and support.
2. Apply Mortar to Wall
Once the surface is prepared, it’s time to apply mortar. Mix the mortar with just enough water to achieve a workable consistency. Apply a uniform coat of thin mortar, approximately 1/2" to 3/4" thick, to the prepared surface. Ensure the mortar is evenly spread and adheres well to the metal lath. Use a trowel or notched trowel to ensure consistent coverage and an even layer for stone placement. The mortar should be thick enough to hold the stones in place once applied.
3. Apply the Stone
Now, it's time to install the stones. Begin by laying out the stones randomly to get an idea of how they will fit together before applying any mortar. Start by installing corner stone's first to create a solid foundation for the rest of the stones. Then, work your way from either the bottom up or the top down, depending on your preference. This method helps maintain a level and consistent appearance. Make sure the joints between the stones are as tight and uniform as possible. Press each stone firmly into place with a gentle wiggling motion to promote bonding. The mortar on the back of the stone should squeeze out and surround the edges of the stone, ensuring a strong bond. For larger stones, additional mortar may be needed to fully secure the stone to the wall.
4. Remove/Dress Excess Mortar
Once the mortar has set enough for the joints to firm up, it's time to remove any excess mortar. Use a wooden or metal striking tool to carefully scrape off any mortar that has oozed out between the stones. At the same time, press additional mortar into the joints to ensure they are fully sealed. Make sure to work in small sections to prevent the mortar from hardening before you can properly smooth it out. The edges of the stones should be completely sealed with mortar to prevent gaps and ensure a polished look.
5. Clean the Stone
After striking the mortar joints, the next step is to clean the stones. Use a wire brush to gently scrub the face of the stones, removing any remaining mortar. It’s crucial to clean the stones before the mortar has fully set, so never let mortar sit overnight before brushing the joints. Clean off any mortar smears on the stones to reveal their full aesthetic, being careful not to damage the stone's surface.
6. Brush Joints/Completion
For the final touch, use a whisk broom to gently brush the mortar joints, ensuring they are smooth and free from loose mortar. Take your time to ensure that all excess mortar has been removed, leaving a neat, professional finish. Continue brushing until the mortar is fully integrated into the joints, creating a clean and uniform appearance that enhances the overall look of the stonework. Once this is done, the installation is complete.
